An Island of Peace in a Striking Paris: Pontifical Vespers at Notre-Dame
The event took place during massive strikes in Paris, and I was worried whether I would be able to get there at all. Yet on Sunday, 18 October 2026, on the feast of Saint Denys the Areopagite, Notre-Dame de Paris hosted the pontifical vespers of the Assembly of Orthodox Bishops of France, and it became an island of peace in the midst of a restless city. This unifying service takes place once a year and gathers clergy, members of the diplomatic corps, politicians and international journalists under one roof.
I was honoured to attend as a founding member of the Byzantine Choir and as a representative of my husband, HSH Prince Alexis Andronikof. During the service I received blessings from Metropolitan Dimitrios of the Ecumenical (Byzantine) Patriarchate for us both. I also had meaningful conversations with guests and supporters about the importance of the Byzantine spiritual legacy and the responsibility to preserve and pass it on.
For me, this event also reflected the spirit of the Byzantine Choirs project: Orthodox traditions and cultures meeting in one place, in prayer and in song. In a time of deep divisions, such moments show that civilizational and cross-cultural dialogue is not an abstract idea but a living practice. Byzantine chant, shaped over centuries by Greek, Arab, Syriac, Georgian, Slavic and Romanian voices, carries the memory of a civilization that connected East and West, and today it brings together communities from many countries and traditions in one shared space of prayer and mutual respect.
The association has already achieved a great deal. On 9 May 2026, it held its founding concert at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint-Denis, with 100 choristers from the Byzantine traditions of Paris, under the honorary presidency of Bishop Guillet of Saint-Denis. The association is also a member of the Confédération musicale de France.
As Honorary Patron of the Institute of Strategic Studies named after Andronic Komnene of the Byzantine Empire, a direct ancestor of the Princely Andronikof Family, and as Rector of the Swiss Institute of Cultural Diplomacy, I am committed to supporting initiatives that preserve this spiritual and cultural heritage, foster dialogue between civilizations and cultures, and share it with the wider world.
